News, Media and Blogs

In today’s world, news and information are widely available.  It is obtained from the internet and the media such as television and radio.  Anyone can put information or their opinion on the internet through various methods.

This has democratized the worldwide information flow.

But there are problems related to this.

The quality of this information is unknown.  Also, most of it is totally unimportant;  unimportant as in, if you did not know, it would make no difference(to you).  There is some important news, but very little.  This is information that if people new about it, it would or should cause them to take action.

It means there is an unlimited amount of  worthless items on the internet.  It also means that readers have to hunt for the valuable items.

The news available from the media is not news; it is mostly entertainment and is the same as that from the internet, almost totally worthless.

Why is most news and information worthless?

People do not want hard news.  They want to be entertained and have something to whine about.

Government Finances

leave a comment »

All governments are slowly going bankrupt.

This includes local, state and federal; both in the United States and the rest of the world.

Why?  And can anything be done about it?

The simple answer is to raise taxes and/or cut spending.  But is that a long term solution?  The problem is that taxes can only go so high and the need for spending is bottomless.

The budget problem is directly related to the state of the economy.  The worse the economy the worse the budget problem becomes; the worse the budget problem the worse the economy becomes.

Politicians do not have an answer.  They lack the requisite abilities.

So, what is going to happen?

The world will just muddle-through while slowly sliding into the abyss of economic disaster.

Promoting democracy as a form of government is a big issue in the world today.

Many groups are campaigning for a change to a democratic government in countries other than their own.  Right now the favorite target is the Middle East.

Should outsides interfere in the governments of other countries?

Democracy is touted as the best form of government.

Democracy, like all existing forms of government, is good or evil depending who controls the government.

The basic issues about democracy are these:

It gives everybody a say/vote.

Majority rule; is this good or bad?  Often described as mob(as in lynch) rule.

Representational versus direct democracy.

Anyone can run for office;  fools, crooks and incompetents are often elected.

What the voters want versus the intelligent and/or fair.

Is it really the best form of government?

Could a better form of government be created?

The Economy — When is it going to turnaround?

Because politicians are not doing what is necessary.  They also have no understanding of economics.

Are new jobs being created?  If the working population is growing by 100,000 a month, while few if any jobs are being created;  what happens?

The unemployment rate rises.

What if all elected representatives pay was tied to the true rate of unemployment:  if the true unemployment rate is 20%(which it is), then 20% of elected representatives at all levels of government would receive no salary or benefits.  It would be the same for them as for the total population.

Also, they were not allowed to solve the problem with additional government hiring.

They would suffer just like the rest of the American people.  But the situation would get worse because they do not know how to create jobs.

Immigration, both legal and illegal is a hot button issue today; both in the United States and other countries.

For both sides, it is a very emotional issue.  All of the debate is based upon emotions, even the facts.

In the future, more and more immigrants will enter other countries making the issue more important as well as more inflammatory.

The pro side says that all immigration is a good thing.

The con side says that all immigration is a bad thing.

What is the real answer?

The issue would be more workable if the facts could be agreed upon.  There is disagreement about its effect on the economy, culture, crime, health and the very core of the new country(the country receiving the immigrants).

Then there is the meanness and cruelty issue of excluding immigrants from migrating to a country, especially with the use of force.

There is an answer, but neither side will like it.

“Obama says 80% of Americans want higher taxes.”  If they do, it is taxes on others, not themselves.

“US recognizes Libya rebels as legitimate government.”  Why do this?  Why even be involved in Libya?

The president is crazy.  Higher taxes and foreign policy boondoggles.  Spend money on foreign wars for no reason, raise taxes to drive business and jobs overseas.  Third World here we come.

More and more financially secure Americans are moving to other countries, taking their dollars with them.

The economy of the United States is in tatters.

The unemployment rate is rising, inflation is high, the debt ceiling is an issue, state and local government are having trouble balancing their budgets, sending your children to college costs an arm and a leg, politicians want to raise taxes, health care is deteriorating, social security and medicare are going broke.

If the Federal Government was required to have a balance budget, it to would be another major problem.

The list goes on and on.

The governments, federal, state and local are business as usual.

Stimulus, bailouts, tax business and the rich are all they can think of to do.  Oh yea, two other things they do:  politic and FAIL!

What is inflation?  Economists have a very technical definition based upon the amount of money in circulation.  To the average individual, it means the increase in the cost of living.

As usual, the economists have their heads in the clouds; so this discussion will use the individuals’ definition.

Every month the Federal Government releases the inflation number.  This number is wrong.  Why?  The basket of goods the government uses is incorrect; it is not the same basket of goods the average consumer buys each month.  Also the government includes a quality/feature factor to reduce the amount of the price increase.

Everyone knows that costs are rising much faster than the inflation number released by the government.

So what are recipients of social security and other fixed income amounts to do when the cost of increase amount is much less than inflation?

What is the government doing about this?

Debt Ceiling Update

leave a comment »

The president has offered $4 trillion in cost savings over the next decade.

This is political theater.

It is only $400 billion a year on average or maybe $4 trillion in year ten, a drop in the bucket.

The federal government needs to significantly cut spending.

But it will not, as every special interest group(of voters) will whine and cry like little children denied their candy.

Boondoggle in Libya

leave a comment »

The war in Libya has been under way for months without any indication when it might end.

And our President got the United States involved in this.

The United States is wasting time and money to increase anti-Americanism in the Arab world.  During this time, 150 million barrels of oil production have not been available, helping to push oil prices higher.

Why did Obama do this?  What did he hope to accomplish?

This rivals the Bush administration’s war in Iraq as a very stupid action.
