Barbarian Violence in Baseball

leave a comment »

Cole Hamels of the Phillies hit Bryce Harper of the Nationals with a pitch, then admitted he did it on purpose.

The commissioner of baseball suspended him for five games, not five pitching starts.  So, he may not even miss one start.

Beyond being unsportsmanlike conduct, Harper could have been seriously injured, even had his career ended.

Hamels act is and was a criminal.

Correct action would have been a permanent suspension from baseball with a fine of all salary for current and past year.  Criminal charges should have been filed; Hamels convicted of premeditated violence just like a street thug; and sentenced to five years in prison without parole.

It is past time for deliberate and unnecessary violence to stop in professional sports.  Both the leagues and law enforcement agencies should take immediate action.  If they will not act, then congress should act hard and swift; an end to their anti-trust exemption and price controls would get their attention.

The facts no one wants to read.
